01- The Honest Look
Where are we really, right now?
Where Great Teams Keep Growing
They're maintained, practiced, and chosen — every day.
Surface is a 12-month team development experience for intact teams who have completed Five Behaviors® Team Development. Six sessions. One year. All of it designed to take what you built and make it a way of life.
Every two months your team receives a personal reflection — a few honest questions to sit with before you gather. Then 30 - 60 minutes together going deeper on what matters most. No big preparation. Just intentional, focused time with the people you work with every day.
We send a personal email to each team member every two months — with a short reflection sheet attached. No login. No platform. Just an email from someone they already trust.
Each person completes their reflection sheet on their own before the team gathers. A few honest questions. Ten minutes. Nobody sees it but them — until they decide to bring it into the room.
Thirty to sixty minutes. Led by the team leader or internal facilitator using the WorkWise facilitation guide. Real conversation. One commitment before everyone leaves.
Session 06 is different. After 12 months, your team gathers for a half-day session with an experienced facilitator — Progress Report in hand, ready to look at where you started, where you are now, and where you go next.
This isn't a program you complete. It's a practice you build.
Where are we really, right now?
Are we having the real conversations?
Are we all in - or just going along?
Trust — what we show and what we hide.
Who's willing to say the hard things?
How far have we come - and where do we go from here?
Surface is designed for intact teams who have already completed the Five Behaviors® Team Development experience. It's built for team leaders and their teams who want to sustain the work they started — and turn a one-time experience into a lasting practice. If your team has been through Five Behaviors® and you want to keep that momentum alive, Surface is for you.
Yes. Surface is a continuation program, not an introduction to Five Behaviors®. It assumes your team already shares a common language, a set of commitments, and a baseline of trust built through the original experience. Teams who haven't gone through Five Behaviors® should start there — we can help with that too.
Surface is free. It's part of our commitment to helping teams continue the important work they've already started — no additional cost, no hidden fees.
For Session 06, the half-day Progress Report session, we strongly recommend using an experienced facilitator. If you choose to use WorkWise for that session, there would be an additional charge for facilitation and the Progress Report. We can build that into your original Five Behaviors® proposal or quote it separately. Reach out and we'll walk you through the options.
The time investment is light — but the payoff is significant.
Each session is designed to take less than an hour. Individuals spend about 10 minutes completing their personal reflection sheet on their own before the team gathers. The team conversation typically runs 30 to 50 minutes. But here's the thing — if rich dialogue emerges and the conversation runs longer, that's not a problem. That's the work actually happening. Any team would gladly spend an extra 20 minutes solving a real issue together.
Sessions happen every two months, so the ongoing commitment is minimal. Over the course of a year, you're investing a handful of hours in something that directly impacts how your team performs, communicates, and shows up for each other every day.
That's a trade most leaders would make without hesitation.
Sessions 01 through 05 are designed to be led by the team leader or internal facilitator using the WorkWise facilitation guide we provide. No outside facilitator is required. For Session 06, we strongly recommend having an experienced facilitator. That session is built around your team's Five Behaviors® Progress Report, and having an experienced outside voice in the room helps the team go further than they could on their own.
The Five Behaviors® Progress Report is a reassessment tool that shows how your team has grown since your original Five Behaviors® experience. It's taken at the 12-month mark — before Session 06 — and gives your team a data-driven picture of where they started and where they are now. The reassessment is triggered by your EPIC admin. If you're unsure who that is, reach out to us and we'll help you get it sorted.
Every session is designed for the whole team — we strongly encourage scheduling these conversations at a time when everyone can be present. That said, life happens.
If someone misses a session, they still receive their reflection sheet via email and complete it on their own. The team conversation moves forward — one person's absence doesn't stop the work. What matters most is that the team keeps showing up consistently over the course of the year.
For Session 06, we strongly recommend that every team member attend. That final conversation — built around a full year of growth and the Progress Report data — is one worth being in the room for.
Fill out the enrollment form on this page and we'll be in touch. Enrollment is simple — we get your team set up, send the facilitation guide to your team leader, and kick off the first session email sequence. The whole onboarding process takes less than a week.
Most team development programs are events. Surface is a practice. It's built on the belief that great teams don't happen in a single workshop — they're maintained, practiced, and chosen every day. Surface gives teams a structured, sustainable way to keep doing the work without requiring major time commitments or outside facilitation for most of the year. It's designed to fit into how teams already work, not on top of it.
Yes — and we recommend it. Including Surface in your original proposal sets the expectation from the start that the Five Behaviors® experience is the beginning, not the end. It also simplifies the decision for your team and ensures the sustainability work is already planned before the initial engagement begins.
Surface is designed to give teams the habits, language, and practices to keep going on their own. After 12 months, most teams have the foundation they need to sustain the work independently. That said, many teams choose to continue with another round of Surface, a deeper engagement, or additional WorkWise programming. The goal is never dependency — it's capability. We want your team to be stronger at the end of Surface than they were at the beginning, and equipped to keep building.
